The Miller family and Larry H . Miller Megaplex Theatres , in partnership with the Utah Film Commission , celebrated 100 years of moviemaking in Utah with an exhibit in the Utah State Capitol , the Megaplex “ Filmed in Utah ” series and more .
The first movies filmed in Utah premiered in 1924 . Sadly , there are no surviving prints of “ The Covered Wagon ” and “ The Deadwood Coach .” However , memorabilia honoring those two films , as well as many other impactful projects for Utah ’ s film industry , are on display in the upper corridors at the Utah State Capitol through the end of 2024 .
Gail Miller , members of the Miller family , and LHM executives were invited to take a private tour of the exhibit , which includes a nod to the first Megaplex location , which opened 25 years ago .
The yearlong celebration also includes the “ Filmed in Utah ” series , hosted at select LHM Megaplex locations throughout the year . Moviegoers got a chance to see classic Utah-filmed westerns like John Wayne ’ s “ The Searchers ” and Robert Redford ’ s “ Jeremiah Johnson ” along with fan favorites like “ Dumb and Dumber ” and “ Galaxy Quest .”
“ Megaplex is thrilled to partner with the Utah Film Commission to help celebrate the rich history of filmmaking in Utah ; from the classic westerns of John Ford to the amazing work of Robert Redford , to the quirky comedies starring Jim Carrey and Tim Allen ,” said Britten Maughan , senior vice president of Larry H . Miller Sports + Entertainment . “ These films showcase the natural beauty of Monument Valley , Arches , Moab , and so many other familiar vistas . We ’ re excited to share them on the Megaplex big screens with a new generation of moviegoers .”
