Back to Life Rehabilitation, run by Jeanmarie Towsley, is a centre that provides therapy programs to help meet personal goals and individual needs for children and adults with Autism or ADHD. Towsley is specially certified to practice Sensory Integration, a method used to help heighten a client’s ability to function in day-to-day scenarios. “We look at the original five senses that everybody knows about as well as the vestibular, which involves movement and balance, and proprioception, which is our muscles telling our brain where we are in space,” she explains. “About 84 per cent of children that are on the autism spectrum, have difficulty understanding where they are in space and how they are moving. We often see kids who spin and not even realize that they are spinning. “With sensory integration treatment, if we decide that they’re not getting enough input, we’ll do lots of banging and crashing on the mats in order to help them understand where they are in space.” Inside Back to Life Rehabilitation is state-of-the-art equipment that helps exercise the extra two senses Towlsey’s clients struggle to utilize on their own. This includes a swing hanging from the ceiling and a ball pit in the corner of the room. After a thorough consultation, Towsley creates a rehabilitation plan to help her clients navigate these tools and ultimately progress to the goals set by their parents and by Towlsey. !
