t ra i n i n g first awa fenestration diploma awarded T he very first AWA FenestrationDiploma was awarded to Edward Mortimer in April, 2016. Edward began working for JELD-WEN Australia as an Industrial Designer after completing a Bachelor of Industrial Design from the University of Technology, Sydney. Encouraged by JELDWEN’s National Technical Manager, Andrew Stewart, Edward developed his knowledge of the industry by undertaking training with the AWA. By the time the FenestrationDiploma was launched early in 2016, he was already on the verge of completing all the requirements that would allow him to do the exam and achieve the Diploma. This lead Edward to be awarded with the very first FenestrationDiploma. “Industry specific courses and certificates are a great way to get recognition while also learning and developing skills,” says Edward. “One of the great things about this industry is the ever expanding breadth and depth of knowledge in a wide range of areas, and it’s great to be constantly learning and developing new skills.” Edward is particularly interested in and passionate about the overlap of sustainable manufacturing and building practices to produce long lasting and elegant design. He would love to see the broader building products industry adapt to the use of ultra-low energy building products and initiatives such as community owned solar projects. Edward’s goal is to develop his skills and knowledge as he looks forward to a long-term career in the industry. 01 The FenestrationDiploma has been developed by the AWA to formally recognise the skills and knowledge of members that are specific to the window and door industry. To qualify for the FenestrationDiploma, the applicant needs to complete 150 points of AWA training within a two year period, selected from a range of online courses and the Intermediate Fenestration Course. To be eligible, the applicant must hold an industry relevant Certificate III or university qualification, or have worked at least two years full time in the industry. Once all the training is completed and eligibility has been established, the applicant can sit the FenestrationDiploma exam, completed online. For more information on the FenestrationDiploma, visit the AWA website and look under Events, or contact the AWA Sydney Office on 02 9498 2768. 01 Tracey Gramlick, AWA Executive Director and CEO, presents Edward Mortimer with the first FenestrationDiploma.
