Course Name: Ceramics II Type of Course: Elective Course Available to: 10th- 12th grade
Prerequisites: Ceramics I( 70 %+)
Description: This course enhances level-one skills and provides opportunities to apply design techniques in clay through hand building and / or throwing on the potter ' s wheel and introduces formulation of basic glazes and kiln firing and stresses evaluation of clay forms through art criticism.
Course Name: Ceramics III and IV Type of Course: Elective Courses Available to: 11th and 12th grade
Prerequisites: Ceramics II( 70 %+) AND teacher recommendation
Description: These courses extend clay techniques and provides opportunities to apply design techniques in clay through hand building and / or wheel throwing techniques while developing personal artistic voice. These courses present ceramic / pottery forms as art and craft in historical context and explore ideas and questions about purposes and functions of ceramic forms, past and present.
Course Name: Drawing & Painting I Type of Course: Elective Course Available to: 9th- 12th grade
Prerequisites: VA Comprehensive I( 70 %+)
Description: This course will explore intermediate drawing and painting techniques including contour, gesture, value, color theory, composition, and perspective. Through a series of set-ups and demonstrations, students will learn to create dynamic compositions while gaining a sound understanding of materials and methods. Media may include graphite, charcoal, ink, oil pastels, colored pencils, acrylic, and watercolor paints. This course also stresses critical analysis of master paintings and drawings of different styles and historical periods.

Prerequisites: Drawing & Painting I( 70 %+)
Description: This course introduces advanced drawing & painting techniques and focuses on individual expression. Problem solving skills are challenged to achieve mastery of techniques and materials, and assignments will be more open-ended to allow for more diverse and original outcomes.
Course Name: Drawing & Painting III and IV Type of Course: Elective Courses Available to: 11th and 12th grade
Prerequisites: Drawing & Painting II( 70 %+) AND teacher recommendation
Description: These courses enforce drawing and painting skills and critical analysis skills for responding to master drawings and paintings of different historical and contemporary styles and periods. This course examines solutions to increasingly complex mixed media works of art and the development of personal style and a body of work.
