Course Name: Introduction to Career Competencies Type of Course: Elective Course
Available to: 9th- 11th grade
Prerequisites: None
Description: This course is designed for students to acquire employability skills that ease their transition to the workforce. Specific skills within the course provide additional opportunities for students to sharpen academic and employability skills, financial literacy, multiple forms of communication strategies, mastery of technology and specific-related tools, workplace safety, and self-advocacy approaches. Through participation in this career pathway, students will learn about the world of work by achieving academic challenges, participating in project-based learning activities, workplace enrichment experiences, and participation in a Career and Technical Student Organization( CTSO) that provides inner-personal and group-related leadership skills.

Available to: 11th and 12th grade
Prerequisites: Application
Description: A course option for students that enables students to participate in a mentor-supervised, on-the-job training experience for career awareness and exploration. Students select a specific career field or industry’ s entry-level job in which to participate. The Work-based Programs Teacher-Coordinator visits the job mentor to assess student performance and supervises the student in job skill development. The student maintains a portfolio containing records of weekly hours on the job, completed participation forms, and other required materials. All Work-Based Learning students must meet the following requirements to participate in the program:( 1) On track to graduate( Junior or Senior – at least 16 years old)( 2) Have an acceptable attendance and discipline history( 3) Currently employed or seeking a paid or non-paid internship( must have placement before the semester in which you wish to participate)( 4) Placement must be relevant to career interests / goals( can include CTAE courses or JROTC classes)( 5) Have reliable transportation to and from the work site and have proof of automobile and health insurances( 6) Have a valid Social Security number and willing to complete a work permit form( 7) Be able to complete required number of hours( 8) Be willing to comply with all health-related screenings / drug tests required by the sponsoring employer( 9) Have two acceptable recommendations – one from your CTAE teacher is preferred( 10) Seniors may not have Minimum Day, Mentorship, or WBL in the same semester.
