Course Name: Calculus Available to: 11th and 12th grade
Type of Course: Core Course
Prerequisites: Precalculus( 70 %- 94 %) OR AP Precalculus( 70 %- 89 %)
Description: This course is a fifth math credit option that provides students with the opportunity to develop an understanding of the derivative and its applications as well as the integral and its applications. Throughout the course there should be a focus on notational fluency and the use of multiple representations. The course includes the study and analysis of limits and continuity as applied to a variety of functions; the derivative as related to limits and continuity; various derivative rules such as product, quotient, and chain; applications of the derivative including curve analysis, applied max / min situations, related rate problems, and use of Mean Value Theorem; the definite integral as a limit of Riemann sums; properties of definite integrals; the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus as it relates derivatives and integrals; techniques of integration including u-substitution; and applications of the integral including solving separable differential equations, finding a particular solution curve given an initial condition, area between curves on a coordinate plane, and average value situations. Students earn an additional 0.5 quality point towards their GPA for this course.
Course Name: AP Statistics Available to: 10th- 12th grade
Type of Course: Core Course
Prerequisites: Precalculus( 95 %+) OR AP Precalculus( 70 %- 89 %)
Description: A fourth math credit option designed for students to be the equivalent to a one-semester introductory college statistics course to introduce students to the major concepts and tools for collecting, analyzing, and drawing conclusions from data. Students are exposed to four broad conceptual themes: exploring data, sampling and experimentation, anticipating patterns, and statistical inference. This course provides the major concepts and tools used for collecting, analyzing, and drawing conclusions from data by exploring statistics through discussion, activities, and designing surveys and experiments. The course will involve independent study and frequent mathematical and written analysis to prepare students for the AP Statistics Exam. Students earn an additional 1.0 quality point towards their GPA for this course.
Course Name: AP Calculus AB Type of Course: Core Course Available to: 11th and 12th grade Prerequisites: Precalculus( 95 %+) OR AP Precalculus( 70 %- 89 %)
Description: This course is designed to be the equivalent to a first-semester college calculus course devoted to topics in differential and integral calculus. This course features a multi-representational approach to calculus, with concepts, results, and problems expressed graphically, numerically, analytically, and verbally. Exploring connections among these representations builds understanding of how calculus applies limits to develop important ideas, definitions, formulas, and theorems. A sustained emphasis on clear communication of methods, reasoning, justifications, and conclusions is essential. The course will involve independent study and frequent mathematical and written analysis to prepare students for the AP Calculus AB Exam. Students earn an additional 1.0 quality point towards their GPA for this course.
