Course Name: AP Calculus BC Type of Course: Core Course
Available to: 11th and 12th grade
Prerequisites: AP Precalculus( 90 %+)
Description: This course is designed to be the equivalent to both first and second semester college calculus courses. This course applies the content and skills learned in AP Calculus AB to parametrically define curves, polar curves, and vector-valued functions, develops additional integration techniques and applications, and introduces the topics of sequences and series. The course will involve independent study and frequent mathematical and written analysis to prepare students for the AP Calculus BC Exam( students will also earn an AP Calculus AB subscore). Students earn an additional 1.0 quality point towards their GPA for this course.
Course Name: AP Research Mathematics Type of Course: Elective Course
Available to: 12th grade
Prerequisites: Full completion of AP Seminar( take AP exam and complete all portfolio components)
Description: This is the second and final course in the AP Capstone Diploma program that is an interdisciplinary course that allows students to deeply explore an academic topic, problem, issue, or idea of individual interest. Students will design, plan, and implement a yearlong investigation to address a research question. Through this inquiry, they further the skills they acquired in the AP Seminar course by learning research methodology, employing ethical research practices, and accessing, analyzing, and synthesizing information. Students reflect on their skill development, document their processes, and curate the artifacts of their scholarly work through a process and reflection portfolio. The course culminates in an academic paper of 4,000 – 5,000 words( accompanied by a performance, exhibit, or product where applicable) and a presentation with an oral defense. The course will prepare students to complete all components of the Digital Portfolio( no exam is taken in May). This course is required for 12th grade STEAM students. Students earn an additional 1.0 quality point towards their GPA for this course.
Course Name: Honors Multivariable Calculus
Type of Course: Core Course
Available to: 12th grade Prerequisites: AP Calculus BC( 70 %+)
Description: This post-AP course is designed for students wanting to enroll in a mathematics course beyond calculus. It includes three-dimensional coordinate geometry; limits and continuity of functions with two independent variables; partial differentiation; multiple integration; the gradient; the divergence; the curl; Theorems of Green, Stokes, and Gauss; line integrals; integrals independent of path; and linear first-order differential equations. Topics will be analyzed in multiple ways, to include verbal and written, numerical, algebraic, and graphical presentations. Students earn an additional 1.0 quality point towards their GPA for this course.
