Course Name: Precalculus
Available to: 10th- 12th grade
Type of Course: Core Course
Prerequisites: Advanced Algebra( 80 %- 94 %) OR Honors Advanced Algebra( 70 %- 79 %)
Description: This course is a fourth math credit option that provides students with the opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of concepts in Algebra that are critical to the study of Calculus as well as an understanding of trigonometry and its applications. The course includes the study and analysis of piecewise and rational functions; limits and continuity as related to piecewise and rational functions; sequences and series with the incorporation of convergence and divergence; conic sections as implicitly defined curves; the six trigonometric functions and their inverses; applications of trigonometry such as modeling periodic phenomena, modeling with vectors and parametric equations, solving oblique triangles in contextual situations, graphing in the Polar Plane; solutions of trigonometric equations in a variety of contexts; and the manipulation and application of trigonometric identities.
Course Name: AP Precalculus
Available to: 10th- 12th grade
Type of Course: Core Course
Prerequisites: Advanced Algebra( 95 %+) OR Honors Advanced Algebra( 80 %+)
Description: This course is a fourth math credit option designed for students who want to push themselves higher to better prepare themselves for college-level calculus and provide grounding for other mathematics and science courses. Students will build deep mastery of modeling and functions as they examine scenarios through multiple representations. Throughout this course, students develop and hone symbolic manipulation skills, including solving equations and manipulating expressions, for the many different function types. Students will also learn that functions and their compositions, inverses, and transformations are understood through graphical, numerical, analytical, and verbal representations, which reveal different attributes of the functions and are useful for solving problems in mathematical and applied contexts. The course will involve independent study and frequent mathematical and written analysis to prepare students for the AP Precalculus Exam. Students earn an additional 1.0 quality point towards their GPA for this course.
Course Name: Statistical Reasoning Type of Course: Core Course Available to: 11th and 12th grade Prerequisites: Advanced Algebra( 70 %- 79 %) OR Precalculus( below 70 %)
Description: This course is a fourth math credit option designed to give students opportunities to strengthen their understanding of the statistical method of inquiry and statistical simulations. Students will formulate statistical investigative questions to be answered using data, will design and implement a plan to collect the appropriate data, will select appropriate graphical and numerical methods for data analysis, and will interpret their results to make connections with the initial question.
