Science Expo
Literature Review
The Eskom Expo for Young Scientists is a national competition that
fosters a love for science and innovative thinking. It is a prestigious
event, where finalists go on to compete on the international stage.
This year Wynberg Girls’ Junior School had three projects entered
with five girls participating: Zahraa Mohamed, Isabella Ching,
Gracia Heo, Hannah Hill and Aaliyah Hoosain.
Aim: To ask questions about
the world around us and find a
way to answer these questions.
Hypothesis: After the Eskom
Expo, we will have grown as
scientists and innovative thinkers.
Method:
1. Identify a question or topic that interests you.
2. Research the topic.
3. Write up a scientific method for answering your question.
4. Conduct experiment.
5. Share your results with the judges, teachers and public at the
Eskom Expo for Young Scientists.

Discussion:
When I heard about the science expo I was anxious to join and it was
exciting to think that we could be going up against kids way older
than ourselves. It was also exciting to see a bit of UCT (University of
Cape Town), which is really big!
There was a lot to do in the six months leading up to the expo, but
through thick and thin we enjoyed every moment of it. The research
took a while, but it was interesting to find out more about our topic.
Once our projects were done it was time to head to the competition.
The best part of the judging process was being interviewed, one
in particular was fifty minutes long! The judges gave some great
feedback, and the expo allowed us make some new friends and
meet some old ones too. We can’t wait for next year!
