Emotional
Intelligence (EQ)
WGJS has been an EQ-friendly school for some
time now; incorporating heart-friendly values into our
curriculum and encouraging Friendship Days and Anti-
Bullying campaigns. This year as part of our Growth
Mindset theme, we took EQ a step further. We took EQ
into the classroom and gave it its own little “curriculum”.
Our school counsellor, Mrs Tamsyn Alfino, devised a
series of lessons that spanned Grade R – 7 and focused
on incorporating all things EQ. In these lessons, Mrs
Alfino taught our girls about identifying the rainbow of
emotions, using “I-statements” to express their feelings
and making “Proper Apologies” when required to make
amends. Mrs Alfino’s lessons introduced the girls to the
concept of being “Heart Smart” through games and
videos and the girls were encouraged to make and use
an EQ journal to express their feelings. The girls loved
their EQ lessons and they proved to be a fun and helpful
addition to the Growth Mindset theme this year!
