the pre-nursing curriculum required for admission into Marshall University ’ s Nursing Program . Marshall ’ s Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree program is offered to Glenville State students through a partnership between the two institutions . Glenville State ’ s Health and Human Performance programs currently include majors in exercise science , health promotion and athletic conditioning and coaching .
A timeline established by Glenville State ’ s Health Sciences Taskforce outlines several future programmatic expansions , from Medical Laboratory Technician and Wellness Management to Counseling and Social Work .
“ I think Glenville State University is on an exciting path of growth and improvement with the addition of the College of Health Sciences . There is so much unmet need in the health care sector and we want to help fill those needs ,” Manchin added .
The National Spotlight
In March 2022 , the Glenville State University Lady Pioneer women ’ s basketball team closed their 35-1 season with a win over the Western Washington University Vikings to become the NCAA Division II Women ’ s Basketball National Champions . Head coach Kim Stephens , a Glenville State alumna and native of Parkersburg , WV , was named the Division II Women ’ s Basketball National Coach of the Year .
This was the first NCAA title for Glenville State in any sport and was also the first NCAA basketball title for any West Virginia school .
“ Not only in Glenville , in Gilmer County , in North Central West Virginia … but all throughout West Virginia , that team became a statewide phenomenon . We are so immensely proud of Coach Kim and that team ,” says Manchin .
After returning home , the team was honored with a parade in downtown
Glenville , a celebration in the capital city at Haddad Riverfront Park and at a special ceremony with Governor Jim Justice . Governor Justice presented Distinguished West Virginian awards to each of the Lady Pioneers and their coaches . The Distinguished West Virginian award is the highest civilian honor that the governor can bestow .
Sesquicentennial and Beyond
In February 2022 as the institution celebrated its 150th anniversary , the West Virginia Legislature changed the name of the institution from Glenville State College to Glenville State University . The new name reflects Glenville State ’ s authorization to offer advanced degrees .
“ Earning university status was a significant milestone in the trajectory of our institution . Our students can now enroll in Master ’ s level courses in education with more on the way in business , criminal justice , social work and so on . That is of course in addition to our existing undergraduate programs ,” Manchin added .
With expanded program offerings , Glenville State is eyeing the future . It sees

these strategic expansions as a way to remain competitive within the state and region as college-going rates decline .
