Steeped in History
Since its founding in 1872 , Glenville State University has been a cornerstone of West Virginia ’ s Mountain Lakes region .
When it was established , Glenville was a branch of the State Normal School . Even then , people knew how fitting the bucolic setting was for an institution of higher education .
Glenville State is also the only four-year university in the Mountain Lakes and one of only a few higher education institutions serving the area .
It is through a long history of service that Glenville State University earned the nickname , “ The Lighthouse on the Hill .” Of course , Glenville ’ s iconic Administration
Building Clock Tower , which resembles a lighthouse , had something to do with the name . But like any true lighthouse , the Gilmer County institution acts as a guidepost for its students , leading them safely along their educational journeys .
Throughout history , Glenville State has maintained a tradition of teaching excellence by professors who care about each student as an individual , who take the time to get to know each student ’ s goals and who are committed to helping students get an education that will prepare them for a successful career .
Program offerings at the institution have expanded over the years , from focusing solely on educator preparation in the early years , to now offering additional degree programs in education , business ,

Expanding Degree Programs
Underscoring the importance of health care in West Virginia and beyond , Glenville State University is currently working to organize existing and future academic programs within a College of Health Sciences .
“ We want to add the College of Health Sciences at Glenville State University in order to simply be able to offer more training related to health occupations , counseling and social work , health care administration , athletic training and others , in addition to nursing and the other programs we already offer ,” says Glenville State University President , Dr . Mark A . Manchin .
The College of Health Sciences is set to launch in fall 2023 , initially with bachelor ’ s degree programs in Physical Education , Health and Human Performance and
