A PROMISE FULFILLED IN MCDOWELL COUNTY
McDowell County has always been defined by grit, pride and community spirit. On September 2, that spirit shined brighter than ever with the opening of Coalfield Elementary School— a place where modern design meets local character, and where the county’ s youngest learners stepped into classrooms built for their future.
Coalfield Elementary serves students in pre-K through fifth grade and consolidates three aging schools into one modern, inspiring space. Located near Mount View High School, the new building strikes a balance between rustic and modern design— embracing the heritage of McDowell County while ushering in a fresh era for education.
Inside, the school features state-ofthe-art classrooms, indoor / outdoor learning environments, vibrant hallways accented with colorful design and playful touches like a large slide in the gymnasium. These elements reflect a vision of learning that is not only functional but also joyful, ensuring that students are excited to walk through the doors each day.
The road to Coalfield Elementary was not an easy one. For over a decade, community leaders and their partners
pursued funding to bring this project to life. The Thrasher Group, which provided architectural and engineering services, stood alongside the county throughout the journey, helping turn persistence into progress.
“ In one of our state’ s most underserved regions, Coalfield Elementary stands as a state-of-the-art beacon of hope and opportunity for nearly 450 students,” Amanda Peyton, assistant superintendent of McDowell County Schools, says.“ This dream became reality through McDowell’ s resilience and partners like Thrasher.”
Coalfield Elementary is more than a school— it’ s a promise to McDowell County’ s youngest citizens: their future matters, and it begins here.
