“ Understanding that learning is not a one-size-fits-all approach , Doddridge County embraced the idea that not just the staff , but the building itself , should be versed and flexible for emerging education trends .”
numerous features that enhance adaptive learning for all ages and education styles . From sensory rooms that unlock endless growth potential to dedicated makerspaces that encourage collaboration and idea generation , the Doddridge County Early Learning Academy has it all .
To make the space as effective as possible , the Academy was created with an intentional design strategy . The overarching goal was to develop a warm and inviting space for students . Part of that strategy included offering simple wayfinding throughout the facility . This was accomplished using color blocking to divide corridors of the building into easily identifiable wings , with rotated floor finishes , alpha and numerical space designations and lighting cues to aid in ease of navigation for little feet throughout the 43,000-square-foot facility .
Lighting proved important in more than just navigation . Tapping into the aesthetic and health benefits of using natural light , skylights can be found in large portions of the building ,
bathing spaces in beautifully diffused natural light . One portion of the facility that has expansive swaths of sky lighting is the gymnasium . Featuring a heavy-duty vinyl floor with thick foam backing to reduce noise and injury from falling , this bright space inspires a love of play — a critical element to early child development .
Each of these elements , and so many more , were chosen with the clear intention of meeting one primary goal : provide the highest quality education to Doddridge County ’ s youngest students . Starting this process early sets students up for success sooner , and most can agree that a foundation for moving West Virginia forward is synonymous with a solid education for those who are blessed to call the state home . The Doddridge County Early Learning Academy was a project passionate about just that and will leave a lasting legacy for all who attend .
