151 Years of Educating Pioneers

Steeped in History
Since its founding in 1872 , Glenville State University has been a cornerstone of West Virginia ’ s Mountain Lakes region .
Glenville State is the only four-year university in the Mountain Lakes region and one of the only higher education institutions serving the area .
Throughout history , Glenville State has maintained a tradition of teaching excellence . Professors care about each student as an individual and take time to get to know each student ’ s goals . They are committed to helping students get an education that will prepare them for a successful career .
Program offerings at the institution have expanded over the years , from focusing solely on educator preparation in the early years , to offering additional degree programs in education , business , health sciences , criminal justice , land resources , fine arts , social science and more . Glenville State offers graduate-level programs , two- and four-year programs , several fully online degree programs , dual enrollment opportunities for high school students and certificate programs .
“ Our students understand the value that our institution brings . They recognize that you can get a quality education at an affordable price while still retaining the small-town sense of belonging — that ’ s life as a Glenville State Pioneer ,” says President Dr . Mark Manchin .
Expanding Degree Programs
Underscoring the importance of health care in West Virginia and beyond , Glenville State University is currently working to organize existing and future academic programs within a College of Health Sciences .
“ We want to add the College of Health Sciences at Glenville State University in order to simply be able to offer more trainingrelated health occupations , counseling and social work , health care administration , athletic training and others , in addition to nursing , and the other programs we already offer ,” says Manchin .
The College of Health Sciences launched in the fall of 2023 , initially with bachelor ’ s degree programs in physical education , health and human performance and the pre-nursing curriculum required for admission into Marshall University ’ s nursing program . Marshall ’ s Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree is offered to Glenville State students through a partnership between the two institutions . Glenville State ’ s health and human performance programs currently include majors in exercise science , health promotion and athletic conditioning and coaching .
A timeline established by Glenville State ’ s Health Sciences Task Force outlines several future programmatic expansions , from medical laboratory technician and wellness management to counseling and social work .
