Using GL to sort the good, the bad and the suicidal 133 you. Be honest with yourself – remember, begin as you wish to continue, as we discussed way back in Chapter 1. At the same time buy some of the highest quality forms of your high sacrifice foods. For the chocoholics amongst you, try Lindt chocolates. A word of warning: I find that some of my clients have real trouble with this part of the exercise. Being allowed to buy foods that taste good( from the GL list) and rich unhealthy foods to have in the mornings, is just too much for them. A lifetime of self-denial and guilt over their eating has left them almost incapable of buying foods like this under medical instruction! They can’ t bring themselves to do it – it just doesn’ t feel right. They can only buy them when they are being naughty! After you have tried new foods off the GL list, update your shopping list accordingly. This process is the construction of the classic‘ strategic structure’. It takes time to set up but once in place it looks after the problem. In particular it keeps those dangerous kitchen criminals, the fridge and the pantry, in their place. Shop to this list. What my wife does( yes, I’ m very lucky) is simply print off a dozen copies at a time and then each week we circle the things we need. From time to time, as our tastes change, or we come across new foods, we update the master list on the computer. Not only does the shopping list – not the fridge – control what sneaks into our house but it saves time. Anyone in our family can circle an item once they notice that we have run out. Extraordinary items just get written in the margins. To make it even more efficient, our shopping list is ordered the same way as the food is at our local supermarket. While the position of items may change, the general order and layout of the supermarket remains fairly consistent. Part of the trick here is to be open to trying new foods and experimenting with new tastes. This is a lot easier if the people with whom you share your refrigerator also share your attempts to eat more healthily. If your partner won’ t read this book, don’ t be too offended;
