Using GL to sort the good, the bad and the suicidal 132 concept we discussed earlier, might be good for not eating what is in the fridge for a day, even two days, maybe four at a pinch, but such is the power of the humble looking fridge, in the end it will get you. Over the years, I repeatedly hear the story, as my clients become more mindful, of how they will suddenly realize they are standing at their fridge door rummaging through looking for a fix – and they have no recollection of how they got there. One client told me of how she had realized that every time her mother called her on the phone, without any conscious effort or awareness, she would open the fridge door and start eating some food before her mother had finished saying hello. Clearly the phone call was a signal to her refrigerator that it was party time and now that the other guest had arrived it was time to break out the party food. Clever little suckers these fridges! Because fridges and pantries cannot be trusted, we need to do battle with them on our terms, not theirs. The battleground is not in our house on their terms. The battle is won or lost when we are out shopping( or out of our home and eating from takeaways, cafés and restaurants). Any General will tell you that one of the best ways to defeat the enemy is to cut off their supplies. That is how we beat those damned crafty refrigerators and pantries. Start by cleaning out all the problem, low sacrifice foods in your fridge and pantry. Have your own Last Supper party or find out if a local charity could use them. Keep your high sacrifice foods to have for breakfast or morning tea. Now start a shopping list by going through everything you have in your pantry and fridge that you are going to keep buying. Do this on a word processor if you have one so that you can easily modify and print out multiple copies. In the phase of developing your shopping list, take the whole GL list to the supermarket. Look at the lower GL foods in each category and try those that appeal to you. Don’ t waste your time going to a low GL food that you can’ t eat more than a couple of times because the taste bores
