WAYPOINT EMPLOYEE AIDS RCMP IN LOCATING LOST HIKER Janet Dorward of the Waypoint Insurance Port Hardy branch is being called a hero for helping the Royal Canadian Mounted Police( RCMP) locate a lost hiker in early January of this year.
On Saturday, January 7th, a man was reported missing by BC Ferries when it appeared that his car was in line for the ferry but he was no where to be found. BC Ferries called the RCMP about the missing 66-year-old man from Manitoba who had taken a hike out to the WWII plane crash site nearby and hadn’ t made his way back. The RCMP was able to get a hold of him by cell phone, but the man could only give a vague description of where he was since it was getting dark.
The RCMP contacted Janet, who leads a local hiking group, with a description of the area. She was able to tell the RCMP exactly where he was and offered to come out at nine o’ clock that evening to help find him. Janet and the RCMP found the man and brought him back by five o’ clock the next morning. The RCMP stated that without Janet, there was no way they would have been able to find the man that night as the trail is very difficult to follow.
