Hundreds of our heartwarming success stories begin with the
‘Florence Nightingales’ of the Washington County SPCA
In this issue, we celebrate Meg Greenwood - The Florence Nightingale of Kittens.
A
bandoned pets receive a second (or first) chance
thanks to the love and compassion of our foster
homes. Hundreds of kittens arrive at the shelter each
year - very often in dire straits. Without the security
and warmth of a home and individual care, they might
never make it to the adoption floor. Most of these
little ones are like human infants and need immediate
access to around the clock care and attention. Enter
Meg Greenwood!
Meg first became involved with the WCSPCA when
she was contacted to help a litter of motherless kittens.
“I didn’t know much about caring for unweaned kittens
at the time but I quickly learned,” said Meg. And learn,
she did!
The usual suspects for Meg’s bit of magic are kittens
who are too young to be spayed/neutered, nursing
mothers with litters, kittens recovering from surgery
or minor illness, or those needing socialization.
Sometimes, finding a nursing cat who might accept
orphans is easy. Unfortunately, there are many times
that isn’t possible. Translation? warm formula, bottle
feeding every few hours - and little sleep for Meg. “I’ve
mastered a great gruel that can be put in a bottle. It
gives the little guys enough fuel so they sleep for a
little while before awakening again for feeding,” said
Greenwood.

WASHINGTON COUNTY SPCA
CHRISTMAS 2014
We are thankful to Meg for all the work she does in
helping these kittens make it to an adoptable age.
We are also grateful that she takes her service to the
shelter a step further by providing the Kitty Kart to our
satellite adoption center at the Tulsa Hills PetSmart.
Multiple times each week, Meg phones PetSmart to see
who has been adopted and how many open kennels
there are. She then
arrives at the shelter
twice a week, loads
up
kitties,
and
delivers them safely
to have their big
chance at adoption
at PetSmart in the
big city!
The
Greenwood
home has helped
over 400 kittens at
last count. That’s a lot
of caring, cleaning,
m e d i c a t i n g ,
transporting,
feeding,
and
interrupted sleep! V
