Over the last few years , village officials have been working to improve Maybrook ’ s infrastructure and put an economic development plan in place . This proposal dovetails into those efforts .
“ We get an awful lot of traffic on Route 208 ,” said Pritchard . “ We ’ d just like to see that pause .”
The village is currently working on connecting Frederick Meyers Veterans Memorial Park and David Weiss Memorial Park with a crossing over Route 208 and a lighted walkway suitable for pedestrians and bicyclists . The board is waiting to hear back on its grant application for the project .
Another road has also been proposed , this one connecting George Road and Greening Place . This idea is purely conceptual at the moment , but could provide another alternate route or access if Route 208 is closed . Leahy pointed out that right now a closure on Route 208 could cause six mile detours and delay the response of emergency services .
Pritchard explained that such a road would be a joint effort between the village and the land owners along the path of the new road . The village would oversee the project , with DPW contributing labor and equipment . The village would pay the fees for the grant writing , but any other costs , including the engineering for the entire road , would be paid by the landowners .
The village is looking into a 50 / 50 matching grant with applications due next June / July . If the project is awarded the grant , the property owners would receive reimbursement for half of the cost .
“ It ’ s just an idea ,” said Pritchard . “ It ’ s not written in stone that it ’ s going to happen .”
Pritchard plans to present additional
information on economic development at the next village board meeting on Nov . 28 .
In the meantime , even as interest in the future of the village seems to be growing , its history seems to be fading away . Maybrook ’ s small railroad museum may be closing its doors .
“ It sounds like they ’ re dismantling ,” said village attorney Kelly Naughton .
The village board was advised that while the museum had a charter , it expired 22 years ago . In order to reinstate it , the museum would need to pay $ 1,000 and a yearly renewal of $ 250 . Its board of trustees voted against the measure on Oct . 23 . They expressed concerns about decreasing membership and interest and decided to reach out to other organizations to see if they were interested in taking over their collection .
Naughton said she would need to research the situation and determine what kind of entity it was presently , as its charter was expired , and whether it could be merged in some way with the village .
“ It ’ s a shame that there ’ s no interest anymore ,” said Trustee Jim Barnett .
Mayor Leahy said many of the museum ’ s artifacts are pictures and noted that the village would welcome any donations for display in the village hall .
The next village election will be March 21 , 2017 with two trustee positions ( 2 year terms ) and one village justice position with a 4 year term . The board briefly discussed the possibility of increasing the terms for trustees to 4 years .
“ I ’ m not sure how I feel about it ,” said Village Trustee Jim Barnett , saying he could see both sides .
The next village board meeting is on Monday , Nov . 28 at 7 p . m . A work session was scheduled for 6 p . m . before the meeting to discuss whether to pose the question to public in the spring election .
