VC senior plans a career in the military

By JESSICA COHEN jcohen @ tcnewspapers . com

Calista Bond , 17 , of Walden , says she had her first glimpse of a career direction in September of 2014 when she volunteered with Hudson Valley Honor Flights that take veterans to Washington , DC , to visit veteran memorials . She was the youngest guardian in the program , she said . There she encountered State Senator William Larkin .

“ Senator Larkin asked my plans and talked to me about his experiences , living a life of service , helping other people to have the freedom we have ,” said Bond . “ He was a World War II veteran . Knowing him , I decided I want to pursue life in the military and live a life of discipline , always organized . I love discipline and the idea of giving back to something bigger than myself , and traveling around the world .”
Now a senior in her fourth year with JROTC at Valley Central High School , she is executive officer in the JROTC program , one of three top-ranking officers chosen by instructors , the only girl among the three .
“ Girls tend to be more disciplined and patient with teaching ,” she said . “ But the three of us work together well .”
Asked about the ratio of girls to boys in JROTC , she took out her cell phone to look for the information . Of 116 in the program , she said 77 are male , 39 female .
“ All my best friends are in JROTC ,” she said . “ It ’ s easier to relate . We ’ re like-minded individuals . Others have

“ There was food left on the plane ,” he said . “ And we ate lots of coconuts that fell from trees .”
When he returned to the U . S ., he resumed life on the move , working as a conductor for the New York New Haven Railroad freight service for 41 years , he said .
In the Government Center parking lot , he and other vets carried flags , whipping in the wind , as the Maybrook Boy Scout Band played marching tunes that the drummer punctuated with military precision , followed by buglers playing plaintive solos .

different goals and ambitions .”
As executive officer , Bond oversees staff , supplies , security , training operations , administrators , and public affairs in class activities , says Army Instructor Patrick Wimmer .
Meanwhile , outside the program , she works on preparing for another Honor Flight , the first Big Apple Honor Flight , which will take New York City veterans to Washington . She will be the “ mail
“ I had something to read , but I think it blew away ,” said one speaker at the podium . However , he ad libbed with panache , paying his respects , as did other speakers , to veterans there , who represented wars from World War II on . They also paid homage to veterans elsewhere and many thousands who never returned .
Tim Dempsey , commander of American Legion Post 521 , said that 30,000 U . S . soldiers in World War II had never been accounted for , and he detailed the numbers , in thousands , for each succeeding war who are still missing .
“ I and others who never served will never know how it really was ,” said coordinator ,” helping families contact old friends of the veterans on the flight , soliciting letters from them for the “ mail call ” event during that part of the trip .
Next year , Bond plans to attend Norwich University , in Northfield , Vermont , on the way to a career as military police officer . Norwich was the first military college in the U . S ., she says , and founder of ROTC .
County Legislator Mike Anagnostakis . “ It ’ s not like in the movies .”
He passed out copies of one of eleven photos that remained from the pivotal landing at Normandy during World War II .
Elsewhere in the crowd , Linda LaRosa , president of Maybrook Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary , said her group has been raising money for homeless veterans and upcoming Honor Flights that take veterans to Washington memorials . Soon they will do fundraising for cancer-related organizations , she said . Dempsey said Honor Flight applications for Vietnam veterans are now being taken .
