Walden may override tax cap

receives support from at least 60% of the
municipality’s governing board. With the
state-mandated tax cap coming in at a 0.32
increase for Walden, the village board
revealed at its March 22nd meeting that
the trustees will debate whether or not to
override the cap in advance of the budget negotiations. Village Manager John
Revella has submitted a proposed budget
for board review, and the potential override is based on those projections.
With only a modest increase in the property tax cap, the board will discuss the legislation as a contingency plan. “Because
the tax cap is basically $10,000, you’re
kind of figuring you may have to override
it,” Walden Mayor Susan Rumbold said.
“So just in order to be prepared for that
if it does happen, you have to propose the
local law and put that in place.”
With an expected $900,000 budget shortfall in the school district due to a loss
in state aid caused by a clerical error,
residents are already on edge about their
tax bills. “People are concerned about
their taxes,” Rumbold said. “You have village taxes, town taxes, county taxes, state
taxes and school taxes. People are very
concerned about what’s going to happen
with the school budget. If they’re losing
out on $900,000 in aid, they’re going to
have to make that up someplace. They’re
