Walden summer program continues to grow

By TED REMSNYDER
Even with the blazing hot days of summer upon us , the Village of Walden Summer Camp is in full swing at James W . Olley Community Park . The camp , which runs 9 a . m . to 5 p . m . every weekday through August 11 , is enjoying unprecedented success this year . Village Manager John Revella noted at last Tuesday ’ s Village Board meeting that the program already has a record-high 440 registrants this year , 65 more than attended last year ’ s sessions . The camp , which caters to children ages five to 15 , has continuous registration and offers full-day and half-day programs .
The popular camp made an adjustment this year to include a wider age range .
“ What we did this year is that we extended it to younger children , so it ’ s five years old and up ,” Walden Mayor Susan Rumbold said . “ There ’ s also an all-day camp . They do swimming , they do games , activities . They have organized activities to keep the kids engaged all day . There ’ s different age groups , so some may swim at 10 a . m . and then they ’ ll go off and do something else , like playing soccer , wiffle ball , whatever it happens to be for that particular day .”
Rumbold believes that the program continues to expand because of strong word of mouth among local parents . The camp is open to non-residents as well for an added fee . “ It ’ s such a good program ,” Rumbold said . “ A lot of other programs in the area aren ’ t as organized or keep the kids as busy . We make sure the kids are active all day . So it ’ s a very well thoughtout and organized program that we have , and people recognize that and they want their children there to participate . It does keep growing every year , which is kudos to Mike Bliss ( Parks and Recreation Coordinator ) and his staff , because it keeps attracting more and more people because the kids enjoy it .”

from the Corinne Feller Memorial organization to “ Turn the Town Teal ” in the month of September in order to raise awareness for ovarian cancer . The group was represented at the meeting by Village Clerk Tara Bliss , who has volunteered for the charity for the past 16 years . In September , trees and lamps in the village square will be decorated with teal ribbons to remind women to get checked regularly for ovarian cancer .
The tradition honors the legacy of Corinne Feller , a Valley Central High School student from Montgomery who passed away in 1999 at only 18 years old from the disease . Feller ’ s family has established two memorial funds in her honor that raise money for ovarian cancer research and to provide an annual college scholarship for a Valley Central graduating senior . According to the American Cancer Society , approximately 22,000 women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer this year in the United States alone .
During last week ’ s board meeting , the committee also took action to remove an unregistered car from the driveway of 65 Sherman Ave . at the owner ’ s expense . The law states that residents are allowed to store one unregistered vehicle on their property , but the offender had two cars with expired stickers in plain sight at
