Crawford dealing with grass on zombie properties

During last month ’ s Town of Crawford Board meeting , the town officials discussed 19 properties that violated the Property Maintenance Code . Each of these properties exceeded the 10-inch growth limit .
Since then the town has mowed the properties on the list with overgrown grass and weeds .
Town of Crawford has created a new local law that now allows for the town to notify them once and have the grass mowed before it becomes even longer . They are given a public hearing in order to explain their situation and state whether they have or will take care of the violation . Although many of these homes are abandoned or foreclosed , they notify the owners , whether it ’ s a bank or a citizen , of the violation .
Although the banks have property managers , they do not keep up with these zombie homes as they should , Councilman Robert Sassi explained . They choose to pay the fine for the town to take care of the violation .
“ Without it , we have to keep notifying them and grass keeps growing so it becomes hard to keep notifying them . Now one notice covers the season ,” said Town Supervisor Charles Carnes .
At last month ’ s hearing they allowed for the property owners to come in attendance for the hearing . Only one man , Perry Walsh , came to explain that he had been out of the house for two years and the bank owned the home and thought they were taking care of it .
This month , they added two new properties to the list of the previous 19 that were taken care of , but neither owner showed up to the hearing .
