Abstract
Prematurity represents the main cause of neonatal mortality and morbidity , being associated with about one-third of all infant death . Among the major complications of prematurity are included cerebral palsy , vision impairment and cognitive or hearing impairment . Associated conditions increase in intensity and frequency inversely proportional with the gestational age and birth weight . Short-term complications result from anatomic or functional immaturity during the neonatal period . Most commonly encountered short-term complications are hypothermia , respiratory abnormalities , cardiovascular abnormalities , intracranial hemorrhage , hypoglycemia , necrotizing enterocolitis , infection , and retinopathy of prematurity . One or more of these conditions overlapped on prematurity increase the risk of neonatal death and of long-term complications . In Bucharest Emergency University Hospital 1405 preterm births and low birth weight infants were registered during three years , meaning an incidence of 10 %. In our retrospective study , we analyzed the distribution of these cases according to gender , gestational age , obstetrical and maternal associated conditions . In the study group the incidence of the main short-term complications was analyzed . Apgar score at one minute was signiFicant lower comparing with singleton uncomplicated pregnancies , approximatively 30 % of preterm infants receiving an Apgar score lower than 8 at birth . Over 9 % of studied infants presented one or more episode of acute respiratory failure or cardiac arrest . Infectious factor was associated in 19.3 % of cases , and 8.7 % of preterm infants required admission in neonatal intensive care unit . From all 12987 births registered in three years in our hospital , 1.7 % babies were born at a gestational age less than 32 weeks . Low birth weight and prematurity remains a subject of topical interest in obstetrics regarding its major contribution to infant morbidity and mortality .
