Bruising: The Most Overlooked Sign of Abuse
Children – 4 Years and Younger
Any bruising of the torso, ears or neck can be a significant sign of abuse
and must be immediately investigated.*
*In toddlers and older children, normal bruises are typically on the front of the body and
over bony prominences like the forehead, elbows, knees and shins.
Infants – 4 Months and Younger
Any bruising anywhere can be a significant sign of abuse and must be
immediately investigated.
Fact: Bruises can be small and subtle.
Myth: Bruising from abuse is obvious and matches the size of an adult
hand.
