The SustaIAnable Project: Empowering Educators for Sustainable, Technology-Driven Learning by Camelia Timofte
In the academic year 2024 – 2025, the SustaIAnable Etwinning Project brought together 20 partners from 12 countries to address a crucial question: how can teachers integrate emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence( AI), into meaningful learning activities focused on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals( SDGs)?
Over the course of ten months, this collaborative initiative aimed not only to improve digital teaching competences, but also to empower students to become active participants in addressing global sustainability challenges. The project successfully blended digital innovation with sustainability education, leaving behind a series of impactful resources for teachers across Europe.

understanding of AI in everyday school life. The insights collected served as the foundation for shaping project strategies and activities throughout the year.
Each month focused on a distinct pedagogical method paired with a relevant SDG, offering students and teachers structured yet creative opportunities for learning and collaboration: October 2024 – Project-Based Learning & SDGs Students from participating schools collaboratively authored a digital book titled“ Which are the educational challenges in your country?”. This initial activity encouraged reflection on local educational issues, while also introducing learners to collaborative project work. November 2024 – Experiential Learning & SDG 10( Reduced Inequalities) Teachers and students co-designed an e- book of tools, games, and apps aimed at supporting learners with disabilities, fostering both digital literacy and inclusivity. December 2024 to January 2025 – Storytelling & SDG 3( Good Health and Well-being) Participants created a digital illustrated story that promoted healthy habits and well-being, integrating AI technologies to enrich storytelling processes. February 2025 – Inquiry-Based Learning & SDG 5( Gender Equality) A collaborative multimedia presentation about famous women scientists allowed students to research, discuss, and celebrate gender equality in scientific fields.
