The second-grade pupils discussed tolerance , freedom and respect towards others through the paintings of John Gaitis , a Greek painter , sculptor and engraver famous for his Anthropakia ( little people ) as a symbol of alienation and massification of modern man . Following an exhibition of these paintings in class , the pupils dealt with issues of enforced uniformity and the need to encourage diversity and tolerance . They wrote stories based on these paintings to send messages for freedom , democracy , peace , equality and respect . Then they read their story to a class of SEN pupils .
In Sweden , the 4th graders invited pupils of lower grades and borrowed books from the library , which they then read to the younger ones . The children also took the opportunity to build " reading huts " with blankets and pillows , which they then sat and had fun in while they read and listened to fairy tales . This exchange was enjoyable to see . They did something as simple as reading to each other . It was not only training in reading for older pupils - it was also training in listening for the younger children .
