school canteen , we put fables on tables so pupils could read them during lunch . Fables were also tackled at our afternoon care centres at school . The teachers read and motivated the pupils to read through games and dramatisation .
Colegio Sagrado Corazón , Guadalajara , Spain 5th graders of Colegio Sagrado Corazón held a virtual meeting with the residents of The Care Home for Elderly People Fuentelencina . Circolo Didattico San Giovanni Bosco , Biancavilla , Italy At home , pupils made video recordings with their grandparents . They told short stories and the recordings were later shown in class . The children were fascinated to listen to the stories . Some of them were very funny because of the Sicilian dialect . Pupils prepared some posters and retold the stories in a short version . Our 6th graders had a meeting with our educational inclusion centre in Motril ( Granada ). They told each other short stories about tolerance and children ' s rights in English and Spanish . The first story was Giraffes Can ' t Dance . It ' s a touching tale of Gerald , a giraffe who wants to dance . However , crooked knees and thin legs make it harder for a giraffe than you would think .
The other story we read was The Grumpy Tree . It told us about an unfriendly tree in the forest that learned the value of having helpful friends . With the help of these stories , we tackled respect among equals and the importance of being good colleagues .
Furthermore , pupils from Biancavilla wrote short stories with the theme of the EU . The stories talk about different problems : immigration , disability , respect and friendship . They made spoon puppets and imagined visiting one of their partner countries . They used puppets to tell short stories and make short films .
Conclusion The activities helped us achieve the aims of our project : to increase pupils ' motivation for reading , develop pupils ' competence in applying knowledge into practice in literacy education , increase the self-esteem of pupils with fewer opportunities and strengthen pupils ' empathy towards different age and
