Coding a Greener Future: STEAM Solutions for Climate Change – The Challenge of Invisible Footprints by Rodica Aculov

From Math Class to Python Algorithms One of the most impactful examples of real-world learning was the creation of a Carbon Footprint Calculator. Rather than just reading about emissions, students used ICT and Mathematics to build their own tools. Using Python, they programmed decision mechanisms like If / Else logic to calculate impact. For instance, a student had to code the specific carbon cost of eating meat versus a plant-based diet or traveling by bus versus a private car. This forced them to analyze the scientific data behind every line of code. Seeing the numerical output of their own habits on a screen provided a moment of clarity that no lecture could replicate.
In the international eTwinning project STEAM Green Footprint, students from Moldova, Türkiye, Jordan, and Romania stepped out of the role of passive observers to become climate detectives. For many adolescents, terms like carbon footprint are often abstract and distant. To bridge this gap, we moved beyond textbooks and turned our classrooms into laboratories. By investigating their own household consumption, students began to see the invisible threads connecting their daily choices to global environmental shifts. The project successfully transformed cold statistics into a personal mission for sustainability.
Designing the Schools of Tomorrow Creativity met engineering during the Sustainable Design Challenge. Students worked in international teams to brainstorm and prototype Green School Design models.
