San Tarcisio, an eTwinning School since 2018 – 19 and the only one in the Ercolano area, led a vertical curriculum pathway that turned classrooms into a European laboratory of democracy, participation, and active citizenship.
Peter H. Reynolds’ story“ The Dot” provided the inspiration for an interdisciplinary approach in which European values became content, activities, and reflection. In mathematics and geometry, pupils analysed euro coins and banknotes, calculating area, perimeter, and circumference using official ECB data, learning how to search for information from reliable sources and verify its authenticity. The activity linked numerical precision with the ethical dimension of shared values, showing how mathematics can interact with civic education, technology, and digital citizenship. The pathway was enriched by CLIL activities, which made English an authentic language of communication during international meetings and the production of materials.
From the TwinSpace forum, shaped by pupils’ ideas, the Bank of Values took form, consisting of the AURA banknotes designed by the students. Each banknote represented a European value, enabling pupils to reflect on democracy, equality, freedom, human dignity, the rule of law, and human rights, translating them into personal visual representations. Student tutors created a template on Canva, later customised by each partner school.
The voting process became a genuine moment of participatory democracy. Virtual ballot boxes involved pupils, teachers, school leaders, families, former students, stakeholder Paolo Iotti, mayors, and councillors. In the event of a tie, students proposed merging the designs that had received the same number of votes, combining front and back to create the official AURA series.
Collaboration among students was continuous and structured. Pupils worked in mixed international groups composed of students of different ages from Italy, Albania, and Kosovo. This approach fostered intercultural communication, cooperation, and meaningful relationships. A significant shared product was the
