Storytelling, inclusion and multilingual classrooms An equally important aspect of the project is its contribution to inclusive education. Contemporary classrooms are increasingly multilingual, with children bringing different linguistic and cultural backgrounds into the learning environment. Storytelling creates an inclusive space where all pupils can participate regardless of their level of language proficiency.
International collaboration in initial teacher education The most innovative aspect of Open Books... Open Minds is the international collaboration established among European universities through ESEP and eTwinning. Rather than working independently, preservice teachers cooperate in international teams to design educational projects that respond to shared pedagogical objectives.
Illustrations, gestures, facial expressions, repetition, dramatization and cooperative activities reduce linguistic barriers and facilitate comprehension. Children who are still acquiring the language of schooling or learning English as a foreign language can participate through observation, movement, drawing, role-play and interaction with peers. These experiences reduce anxiety, increase self-confidence
This collaborative process encourages participants to exchange ideas, compare educational systems and reflect on different teaching approaches. Working together in English allows students to improve both their linguistic competence and their ability to communicate professionally within multicultural contexts. At the same time, they develop essential competences such as collaborative planning, problem-solving, digital communication and intercultural awareness.
The project also strengthens the relationship between higher education and schools by transforming university assignments into authentic educational experiences for children. In this way,
