Educational Applications of Artificial Intelligence in an eTwinning Project by Barbara Zadraveli

The eTwinning project " From AI to A +" focused on leveraging Artificial Intelligence( AI) tools in education to promote learning, streamline lesson planning, and enrich instruction on sustainability. While AI was the medium, the project explored and applied themes such as cultural, social, and environmental sustainability. Students investigated various AI tools to assist them in understanding school subjects and completing and presenting sustainabilityrelated assignments. The project also addressed the ethical implications of AI usage, promoting critical thinking, academic integrity, and well-being among students, while facilitating the exchange of best practices.
Implemented during the 2023 – 2024 academic year, the project engaged 22 teachers and 140 students from Greece, Croatia, Romania, Spain, Georgia, Italy, and Serbia. Actively participating students gained comprehensive insights into how AI can serve as a valuable tool in education. They learned to harness AI to enhance their learning experiences and academic performance. The project encouraged reflective thinking about the ethical use of AI, fostering responsibility
and academic integrity. Through discussions, collaborative activities, and hands-on applications, students developed a deeper appreciation for sustainability, and the role AI can play in addressing global challenges.
The project objectives were: understand and accept AI in education; address ethical concerns related to AI usage; apply sustainable practices in schools; promote interest in European languages and cultural diversity; develop core competencies: multilingualism, literacy, digital skills, cultural awareness and expression, personal and social skills, and lifelong learning.
Theoretical framework AI refers to machines ' capacity to emulate human cognitive functions such as learning, planning, and creativity. AI systems can process data and respond autonomously, adapting their behavior based on past outcomes( Safe Internet for Kids, 2024).
In developed countries, AI educational tools are becoming integral to the learning process, helping personalize education and reduce administrative workload. Examples include: auto-grading applications and adaptive testing; realtime translation tools; handwriting recognition and automated assessment.
The European Union predicts a productivity increase of 11 – 37 % by 2035 due to AI, including in education( CNN- GR, 2024). In the U. S., AI use in education is expected to rise by 47.5 % by year-end( Walton Family Foundation,
