Deterring property crime in Charbonneau

This article is based on an interview with General Manager Jim Meierotto
Our CCC General Manager Jim Meierotto observes that the level of property crime is up everywhere , including Charbonneau .
“ The biggest difference is that criminal activity is more BRAZEN regarding time of day , locations , and desire to commit a property crime . It is a wakeup call that we all need to do a little more .” Jim notes that there are I-5 crime syndicates that often visit Charbonneau because it is perceived to be an easy target , especially residents leaving valuables in unlocked cars . Recently reported are smash-and-grab car breakins at the Village Center and surrounding neighborhood street parking , as well as stolen cars . All these reports are an indication that bigger and more brazen property crimes are up .
Jim expects that property crime activity will increase as we approach the winter holiday season , as it has in past years .
 Especially Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays
Criminals are always looking for the easy pickings
Christmas and Thanksgiving bandits of the past can return
So why is there a feeling that Charbonneau is a very safe place , relatively safer than other communities ? Jim notes that some residents call CCC staff to report small and petty crimes , but when asked if they have already reported it to police , the answer is no . This can lead the police to believe that Charbonneau has less property crime than other communities . When asked “ What can be done to deter property crimes in Charbonneau ,” Jim notes that there are things that residents can do and things CCC can do .
Resident initiatives to prevent property crime
Jim notes that “ We cannot eliminate crime , but we can together be more effective at preventing crime from happening in the first place .” A useful image is the Crime Prevention Triangle . Take away any one side of the triangle and crime is less likely to occur .
Residents can reduce the opportunity for a crime by simple actions :
Don ’ t leave your vehicle unlocked , or with the keys in the ignition ( it happens )
Don ’ t leave anything of value in the car where it is visible
Don ’ t leave garage car doors up ; lock the garage side doors at night
Park cars in the garage ( Ok so this one is not always possible )
Ask neighbors to watch over your home when you are away on trips ( vendors sometimes leave door-hangers , packages and newspapers near your doorstep , which make it obvious you are out of town )
Residents can band together to form Neighborhood Watch programs , which have proven to reduce property crime by up to 16 % compared to neighborhoods that don ’ t have such programs . This is a growing initiative in Charbonneau , and you can see signs going up to note a Neighborhood Watch program is in place in some areas . Contact EPPS committee member Spencer Groshong ( sgroshong @ comcast . net ) for more information and help on this program .
Jim asks that residents REPORT ALL PROPERTY CRIMES no matter how small or inconsequential .” If petty crime
