Breast Cancer AWARENESS MONTH

BY MARY FIEWEGER
Each year the Charbonneau Ladies Niners Golf hosts the Pink Ball Golf Tournament . It is the largest event in Charbonneau . In the last 18 years we have raised over $ 680,000 , donating to Susan G . Komen , the American Cancer Society and the OHSU Knight Cancer Institute .
In the United States , an estimated 287,850 women are expected to be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2022 . Overall , about one in eight women will be diagnosed sometime in her life . More than 3.7 million U . S . women are living with or have survived breast cancer .
Men get breast cancer , too , but not as often . The American Cancer Society expects that 2,710 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2022 .
Breast cancer occurs when cells in the breast multiply out of control , forming clusters of cancer cells or a tumor . Breast cancer usually starts in : Lobules , the milk-producing glands Ducts , the thin tubes that carry milk from the lobules to the nipples In 5-10 % of cases , the disease can be traced to an inherited gene . Risk also increases with age , a family history of breast cancer , and other factors . In most cases , though , the cause is unknown .
Symptoms of breast cancer vary greatly . It ’ s possible to have cancer with no symptoms . It ’ s also possible that a symptom has another cause and isn ’ t from cancer . If you do have cancer , early detection is important . Do a self-exam each month , and see your doctor if you notice any of the following :
A lump or mass in a breast A lump , swelling or thickening in or near a breast or under your arm Dimpling or puckering of skin on a breast A nipple pulled to one side , pulled inward or inverted Red or scaly skin on a breast Orange peel texture on breast skin Change in breast size or shape New asymmetry of the breasts Nipple discharge Newly visible vein on the breast Most women start having mammograms between age 40 and 50 . You need to start earlier if you have a higher risk . Get a screening mammogram every year or two .
There are five levels of breast cancer :
Stage 0 : Cancer cells are found only in a duct .
Stage I : The cancer is invasive and has spread outside a duct or lobule . Cancer is in the breast and / or lymph nodes .
Stage II : Cancer is more likely to have spread to lymph nodes , such as nodes under the arm .
Stage III : The breast tumor is more likely to be larger compared with stages I and II , and the cancer is more likely to have spread to lymph nodes or to more lymph nodes .
Stage IV : The cancer has spread to another part of the body , such as the bones , liver , lungs or brain .
There are opportunities here in Wilsonville to support cancer research including breast cancer research and awareness .

Solo Sisters

By CANDY FERGUSON

Come and join the fun

This month ’ s Villager theme is transition and renewal . Since it is the beginning of fall , I am thinking one of the most
FERGUSON obvious transitions here in “ Tree City ” is the annual changing of the colors on our trees .
There is nothing more magnificent than the sight of a tree in its fall plumage , being hit by rays of sunshine magnifying the beauty of the tree . I grew up in the northeast , surrounded by beautiful oaks and maples which turned red , yellow and orange in the fall . Then as a young bride , I was whisked off to Southern California , home of the eucalyptus , the occasional Torrey pine and canyons full of scrub pine . There are very few trees indigenous to San Diego , and they certainly don ’ t turn red , yellow and orange . Upon retiring 44 years after my arrival in SoCal , I happily moved to Charbonneau , where I can gaze fondly , from my patio , at the trees on French Prairie Road and enjoy them especially as the leaves transition from green to yellow and gold in the fall .
A transition that I went through in my mid-thirties was going from being a married woman to being a

single woman . As a mother with three young children , I hung out with the soccer moms on the sidelines during soccer season , but I really had a hard time fitting in with the “ couples world ” as a single . Here in Charbonneau we single women are lucky to have Solo Sisters ! No matter when or how you become single , Solo Sisters offers a fun , safe place to meet likeminded women . Most of us are seniors , but we are fun seniors , full of energy and laughter and always ready to try something new . We go wine tasting and become wine club members , or we go to a play and become season-ticket holders . We play bridge , Mah Jongg and Bunco and join groups all supporting these activities . We are civicminded also as we raise money for Boys & Girls Aid , drop off food at a local food pantry or donate blood to the American Red Cross . Through Solo Sisters we make new friends who share our interests in reading , traveling , gardening and so much more . On the fourth Thursday of each month we gather , either in a room at the Activity Center for a potluck and a Games Night , or at a local restaurant , to enjoy happy hour . So please , if you have transitioned recently from being married to solo , or you ’ ve been solo for a long time but desire friendship and companionship , please consider joining Solo Sisters . Write to Deanna Morgan , our membership chairman , at deannamorgan @ gmail . com , and she will send you an invitation to our next gathering . We hope to see you soon !
