Rule of the month
This month ’ s rule deals with teeing the ball within the teeing area - Rule 6.1b . While that sounds simple enough , it turns out that I witnessed inadvertent violations of this rule twice within the last month — one of which occurred during the Club Championship . In both cases a two-stroke penalty was assessed .
In both cases the person was the first to tee off on the hole and that may explain why playing partners didn ’ t note to the player that they were outside the teeing area . Playing partners may have just arrived at the tee or were distracted while marking their own score card or pulling a club out of their bag to tee off .
So be sure to be alert to where both sides of the teeing area are located before you hit the ball . While tees are often lined up from front to back , they may also be offset which was the case in both occurrences I witnessed .
