Electric Blanket Safety.
DID YOU KNOW?
●
●
●
Each year 20 people are killed and over 250 injured in blanket fires.
Faulty blankets cause more than 1,000 house fires a year.
Research has shown that electric blankets ten years old (or older) still in use in homes in
Britain are responsible for 99% of the fires caused by electric blankets.
YOU SHOULD CHECK OR REPLACE THE BLANKET IF:
●

●
●
●
●
●
●
Ensure it displays the BEAB* safety mark – Either a round symbol, Black letters on a White
background or White letters on a Black background.
The fabric is worn or frayed.
Remember, older blankets are much more likely to have one or more of these faults.
There are scorch marks anywhere.
The tie tapes (where originally fitted) are damaged or missing.
The flex is worn or damaged.
Any connections are loose.
You are in any doubt.
ELECTRIC BLANKET SAFETY:

Buy new from reputable traders, as the safety of second hand electrical goods cannot be
guaranteed.
Look for safety marks, symbols such as British Standards number BSEN 60976.
Check the blanket has overheating protection.
Always follow the instructions carefully such as checking the blanket is secure and flat.
Never use the blanket if it is creased or wet. If damp, do not turn it on to dry it out.
When storing the blanket, keep it flat, or if necessary, roll or fold as little as possible and
keep it in a dry place.
Never use the blanket if the fabric is worn or frayed, or if the tie tapes become loose or are
lost. Do not use if the flex becomes worn or damaged or if the connections come loose.
Have your blanket tested at least every 3 years. Contact the manufacturer or a local
electrical repair centre, or watch for any free schemes that may be available.
The next electric blanket testing day in Winchester is on Tuesday 15th October 2013.
