On April 19 and 20, MICS hosted the musical“ Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.” What did it take to make the production succeed? The directors, backstage crew and actors comment on how it felt to be part of the production, and the audience comments on the final product.
What were the biggest challenges of making this musical?
Mrs. Anjie Martin( director & stage designer) believed that the hardest thing about this musical was the sheer size of the production. The large cast, active movements, and simultaneous singing were difficult to coordinate.
Mr. Mike Maclean( music director) faced some challenges with the sheet music for the production, because the only form of music available were lyric sheets. Not only that but the differences in recorded versions made it difficult to pick the best one.
Mrs. Corrin Maclean’ s( choreographer & costume designer) struggled with the size of the stage which was too small for the size of the cast. However, she managed to placed 50 members on stage by putting some casts on risers that expanded the stage vertically.
What was your favorite scene in this musical?
Senior Jenny Lee felt that“ The song of the king”, or more popularly known as“ Pharaoh’ s scene” was her favorite scene.“ It was extravagant,” said Jenny. She found it funny how Pharaoh caused one of the guards( played by Senior George Waters) to faint in adoration.
Junior Brittany McGavran also felt Pharaoh’ s scene was her favorite. She loved its vitality and playfulness. " It was unique,” she said.
Who was your favorite actor / actress?
Jenny Lee’ s favorite actress was sophomore Pia Gossweiler because she had very good facial expression in every scene she was in, whether she was a wife, waitress, or Pharaoh’ s minion.
Brittany McGavran, on the other hand, feels seniors Angela Jacks and Stefanie Tan( the narrators) were her favorite actresses because they sang beautifully and acted well.“ They interacted well with everyone else on stage,” she said.
What part of being in the musical did you enjoy the most / least?
Senior Angela Jacks, who played as a narrator, really enjoyed being a part of this musical. Because she was sick for a while, she felt having to depend on God to heal her voice was very humbling.“ I also really enjoyed watching boys put makeup on,” she chuckled. On the other hand, she hated how much she sweated d u r i n g t h e p e r f o r m a n c e a n d w a s self-conscious about looking like Edward Cullen.
Junior Zach Armstrong, who played as Ruben, really enjoyed the dancing and choreography for this musical. However, he disliked after-school practices, which he felt were both time consuming and rather boring.
