Mountainview is a community that has

managed to isolate itself from the rest of the world. It’ s enclosed itself from all sides, like a bubble. The Mountainview bubble provides protection, but it does it the way an overprotective parent does.“ Can I sleepover at Jimmy’ s house?”“ No, he has parents who smoke. Smoking can give you lung cancer.” You might be thinking that this is an overreaction to the Mountainview bubble, but it ' s thicker than you think it is. Thicker than whatever you think is thick, like kevlar, or whatever the creative minds behind soto feel like putting in it, like kevlar. There have been graduates who have spent their entire lives in Indonesia and could not speak a word of Indonesian by the time they were graduating. There have been Mountainviewers who have never been to the pasar. There are people in this school who have never experienced the thrill of hanging outside of an angkot, and the heightened thrill of falling off from one. People in the Mountainview bubble live in Indonesia, but never truly experience it.
The bubble is thick because it ' s purpose is to be thick. Its purpose is to provide protection from the possible harms to the outside world. Because the outside world is a can be a potentially hazardous place with Jimmy ' s smoking parents, that ' s why. It does this by confining one ' s life to school and his / her home. The confinement is achieved successfully by doing the following: not-associating with people outside the school, home / org, and by providing cars to transport an individual to distances unreasonably short. This is good in the sense that no one will get hurt in the outside world and more focus can be put on school. Also, distractions from the outside world are unseen by the one in the bubble, so even more focus can be put into school. Mainly because that ' s the only thing to focus on. This means all the bubble-person would have to worry about would be fulfilling the standards school asks of the bubble-person: getting good grades, being athletically superior to your peers, and having the required amount of friends to entertain oneself. If you are able to manage all three, congratulations! You are a very talented individual, born to succeed in staying in and not questioning the bubble. There are many who believe the " bubble life " translates directly to having a good job and earning a lot of money from the said good job. And in most cases, this is true; good grades will most likely net you a good job in the business or science industry. But whatever I said in the past 150 or so words is why the bubble is a bad thing. The bubble ' s is bad in the sense that it helps prepare for one ' s future.
Now why would that be a bad thing? Why would preparing for my soon-to-be-successfulfuture be a bad thing?. The bubble ' s preparation for the future is bad, because it could do it to the extent, that you focus more on your future than you do on the present. When one focuses too much on the future, he forgets about living in the present. He focuses too much on preparing to be what society considers a " success " than cultivating relationships and enjoying life. To be a " success " in society is to constantly spiral upwards and be over your peers in terms of monetary possessions and standard of living. To value relationships is to do the opposite.
