Farewell and Godspeed
By Paul Handali Every year, we see teachers come and go. Hard as it is, we have to bid our beloved teachers farewell and bestow our blessing upon them. We wish them Godspeed as they leave our school to do God’ s bidding.
Laura Armstrong
Aunt Laura Armstrong has served the Mountainview Elementary since 1997. When she first arrived in Salatiga, she taught Kindergarten for four years. In 2001, she took the position of Elementary Principal. That year, the school received a bomb threat after the 9 / 11 terrorist attacks, and the school closed for about half a year. Not a very encouraging start, but she persevered and has remained principal until today. Aunt Laura has enjoyed working with great teachers and students.. She and her husband plan on going to Holland for three weeks, then going on to Boise, Idaho. There, they hope to work with refugees from around the world who have fled to America.
Sue Robertson
When Ms. Munsell first arrived at Mountainview in 2010, she had come along with several other single-lady teachers. However, she quickly stood out as she decorated her classroom with Texas and Texas Tech banners. She has taught a variety of subjects, ranging from Algebra 2, to eighth grade Science, to seventh grade Bible. She has really enjoyed all the Madura trips she participated in, and is now more familiar with different Indonesian tribes. She really loved hanging out with students, particularly with her devotion group. She plans to return to Dallas, Texas where she will attend Dallas Theological Seminary for a masters degree in Cross-Cultural Ministry.
In 2006, the boys’ dorm( the Sulawesi dorm) greeted new parents: Uncle Jesse and Aunt Sue Robertson. Although they had served as dorm parents for only four years, they have continued to be involved with the school community until now. Aunt Sue has been our school nurse since she arrived, but in 2012 she started working as the fifth grade teacher. The thing she will miss most about Mountainview is the relationships with the students. She really loved being with the girls for her devotion group, as well as feeling like a parent to the dorm boys. She and Uncle Jesse plan on returning to Arizona, where Aunt Sue intends to work as a nurse either in a school or a hospital.
Sid and Mary Thornton
Kari Munsell
After eighteen years of serving and teaching at Mountainview,“ Uncle” Sid and“ Aunt” Mary Thornton will be leaving us. When they first came here in 1995, Uncle Sid taught chemistry while Aunt Mary was a housewife. Since then, Uncle Sid expanded his range to teaching P. E, Biology, and a variety of Bible classes. Aunt Mary, on the other hand started teaching in 2000, and has taught Elementary classes and high school electives. Throughout their many years here, they have seen many students grow, such as Seniors Kyu Ho Lee, Micah Thornton and Angela Jacks. They have also enjoyed seeing alumni returning to visit and seeing just how far they’ ve come in life. At the moment, the Thorntons are simply trusting God for their future, but they will be returning to America, where they intend to teach again. They also hope to come back to Indonesia.
Ben Warner
Mr. Warner arrived with his wife Amy in 2010 as dorm parents in the girls’ dorm. This, according to Uncle Ben, was an answer to his prayer. He and his wife had been wanting a daughter for a while, and all of a sudden they had a bunch! He also loves how he was able to wear shorts and flip flops everyday. In his three years here, he has taught photography, graphic design and has been in charge of the production of the last three yearbooks. Uncle Ben’ s plans to move back to the United States with Aunt Amy and his kid, Xander. He’ s not quite certain about the details yet, but he just wants to see how he can live the life God wants him to live in America.
