Who is the Holy Spirit?
Christians receive the Holy Spirit the moment they accept Christ as their Savior. Ephesians 1:13 says, “You were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise.” The Holy Spirit is your constant companion who will never leave you nor fail you. Jesus gives us a glimpse of who the Holy Spirit is and the role the Holy Spirit plays in your life when He says the following:
“If you love me, obey my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you. He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you.” John 14:15-17
We are told that once we become a child of God we are made a new creation or a new person. This means that the life we used to live is gone; our past cannot define who we are any more. Instead, a new life has begun in Jesus Christ. Jesus, in John 6:63, states: “It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life.” The Bible talks about being “born again.” What that means is simply that the Spirit has given you a fresh start and an entirely new nature to live differently. If you are a Christian, you already have the Holy Spirit living inside of you.
