ACCESS AND AFFORDABILITY
Throughout his tenure , Chancellor Khosla has significantly expanded access and affordability for students . Established in 2013 , the Chancellor ’ s Associates Scholars Program ( CASP ) has provided more than 1,800 scholarships to deserving students , guaranteeing a debt-free education . CASP is built on a commitment to diversity and inclusion for high-achieving students from high schools , community colleges , organizations for underrepresented communities and students enrolled in federally recognized Native American tribes from across California .
Itzel Guadalupe Jimenez Jimenez ’ 25 , a Karen and Jeff Silberman Chancellor ’ s Associates Scholar and Lincoln High School graduate , chose to major in Spanish literature after recalling a childhood memory of watching her mother struggle to communicate while in the emergency room .
“ The Chancellor ’ s Associates Scholarship has given me a chance to study and pursue my dream career ,” says Jimenez Jimenez , who hopes to work as a translator in the health care industry to help all patients get the care they need . “ This scholarship really means a lot to me because it is one less thing my family has to worry about .”
As part of the Campaign for UC San Diego , Chancellor Khosla personally challenged the community to support undergraduate scholarships , graduate fellowships and health-related professional school scholarships with a $ 1 match for every $ 2 gift . The result : a challenge met with more than $ 21 million raised for scholarships and fellowships from over 2,700 gifts .

The Goeddel Family Technology Sandbox is a new , innovative facility offering real-world experience for students and postdocs in the School of Biological Sciences . The Sandbox is made possible through a $ 7.5 million gift from biotech industry leader David Goeddel ’ 72 and his wife , Alena . It is part of a 10-year public-private partnership with Thermo Fisher Scientific to provide UC San Diego students and researchers access and training on state-of-the-art instrumentation to prepare for careers in biotech and academia .
Under the agreement , Thermo Fisher will provide support for various research initiatives , scholarships and fellowships . The company will also collaborate with UC San Diego on community outreach programs , curriculum development and career mentorship .
“ The Goeddel Family Technology Sandbox will further enhance UC San Diego ’ s profile as one of the nation ’ s top places to study the biological sciences and as the top producer of talent to fuel innovation in life sciences in both academia and industry ,” says Kit Pogliano , dean of the School of Biological Sciences .
