Book publisher , including William Kimber & Co , 1967-88 . Beyond his love of books , as a publisher and voracious reader , he had many interests , including a love of music and opera . He supported several orchestras and small opera companies and enjoyed entertaining his many friends at their performances . From a young age he was interested in furniture and art : indeed , while still at Win Coll he befriended a local antique dealer , spending long hours in his shop soaking up knowledge . His collection of water colours and pictures gave him and his family great pleasure and he always enjoyed sharing his knowledge and acquisitions in a gentle and modest way . He loved the countryside and gardening was his main relaxation and pleasure . He married Hon Cynthia Makins , daughter of Lord Sherfield ( Warden 1974-9 ) in 1967 , who survives him , together with their son and daughter .

He was always interested in languages and became sufficiently proficient in German to work in the former East Germany for some months , after reunification , helping government officials navigate the intricacies of the EU . His interests were wide and serious ; chiefly music . He sang bass in choirs , big and small , all his life , and played the violin and viola in a variety of orchestras . In Brussels , he set the Maastricht Treaty to music and his Barbershop Group sang it in the Grand ’ Place , where it was broadcast by the BBC . He married Angela Davis in 1959 , who survives him together with their son and daughter .

National Service Royal Navy 1952-54 , Trinity College Cambridge 1954-57 , 1 Engineering Studies Parts I and II , President of First and Third Trinity Boat Club . Hawthorn Leslie ( Shipbuilders ) at Hebburn , Tyneside 1957-67 , then Swan Hunter Shipbuilders and British Shipbuilders 1968-85 . He did pioneering work with bulk liquefied gas carriers , especially on safety valves and safe filling limits , and from 1985-91 was General Manager of the Society of International Gas Tanker and Terminal Operators , based in London . He was much involved in organisations which educate young people and apprentices , was a Chairman of the North East Coast Engineering Trust , Chairman of Newcastle Diocesan Synod from 1976-82 and later its Board for Mission and Social Responsibility . He married Mary Latter in 1959 , who survives him with 3 sons .
Peter Laurence Durlacher ( H , 48-53 ); died 11.4.2024 . Father of CLD . VIII 1952-53 ; Institut d ’ Etudes Politiques , Paris 1953-4 , diploma ; Magdalene College Cambridge 1954 , 2 ( ii ) Hist 1957 . Merchant banker 1957-72 and member of Stock Exchange 1973-95 . He was never happier than when at home in Leicestershire surrounded by his extended family and his horses . Following in the footsteps of his parents , he retired to the family home of Mas de Tournamy in the South of France , where he became President of Sunnybank Association , originally an anglophone hospital which he helped reinvent as a retirement home and social club . After his health declined , he came back to England for the last ten years of his life . He married ( 1 ) Jennifer Blauvelt in 1959 ( marriage dissolved 1977 ); and ( 2 ) Mary Girouard in 1985 , who predeceased , and he is survived by 2 daughters and 2 sons .
