He specialised in tropical medicine : Laos 1961-63 , where he was held prisoner by Communist Pathet Lao rebels for a number of weeks ; Ethiopia 1965-8 ; Nigeria , external staff Medical Research Council 1970-4 ; Kenya , WHO 1982-4 ; Consultant Physician , Hospital for Tropical Diseases , London 1974- 2001 ; Senior Lecturer London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine 1974-96 , Professor 1996-2000 , Emeritus from 2000 . WHO , various committees and advisory boards 1975-2010 ; research and publications on tropical diseases . A giant in his field and the top clinical opinion on tropical and imported diseases , he was awarded both the Chalmers Medal , which recognises research in tropical medicine , and the Donald Mackay Medal . He married Diana Wood in 1960 , who died in 2015 , and he is survived by 2 sons and a daughter .

Following the merger with SG Warburg in 1986 , he became a director of Mercury Asset Management Ltd and then a director of Jupiter Asset Management Ltd and a number of its associated investment trusts . A very keen golfer and member of Beaconsfield Golf Club for many years , he also excelled at chess and scrabble . A lover of fine wine , he was a generous man and a good and kind mentor . He married
