He was in his element leading groups to Kurdistan , back to the Elburz mountains , to the Mongolian Altai , Myanmar , Oman and to Borneo , where the local authorities tried to stop him from climbing Southeast Asia ’ s highest mountain , Kinabalu , on the grounds that , at around 80 , he was too old . Painting , generally of landscapes and in water-colours , was a life-long interest and he held two art exhibitions in Central London in 1994 and 2002 . He was also a keen chess and scrabble player .
