John Leonard Thorn ( Headmaster , 1968- 85 ); died 20.10.2023 . St Paul ’ s School . Corpus Christi College Cambridge , 1 Hist Tripos Pts 1 and 2 . Sub-Lt , RNVR 1943-6 , D-Day and Indian Ocean . Assistant Master , Clifton College 1949- 61 ; Headmaster , Repton School 1961-8 . Director , Winchester Cathedral Trust 1986-9 , and Royal Opera House , Covent Garden 1971-6 . Chairman , HMC 1981 ; board member , Securities Association 1987-91 ; Executive Committee , Cancer Research Campaign 1987-90 ; chairman , Hampshire Buildings Preservation Trust 1992-6 ; trustee , British Museum 1980-5 ; governor of : King Edward VI School , Southampton ; King Alfred ’ s College , Winchester ; Stowe School ; and Abingdon School . Author of A History of England 1961 and The Road to Winchester 1989 . He married Veronica Maconochie in 1955 , who died in 1999 , and is survived by a daughter and a son . David Penry Garnons Williams ( F , 37-41 ); died 21.4.2023 . Co Prae . New College Oxford 1942 ( 6 months wartime degree ). Royal Corps of Signals 1941-73 , 2Lt 1943 , Capt 1945 , Maj 1956 , Staff College 1956 , Lt-Col 1969 . Trinity Hall Cambridge 1948-50 , 3 Engineering ; AMIEE 1953 , MIEE 1965 , FIEE 1987 . He retired from the Army in 1973 . RCS Cricket 1951-52 , 1960-61 and Hockey 1951-53 , 1959-61 . He worked for MoD Frequency Management 1973-89 and represented the UK at the International Telecommunication Union , World Administration Radio Conferences in 1979 , 1985 , 1987 and 1988 . A true gentleman and adventurer . He married Kathleen Finch in 1952 , who died in 1982 . He is survived by a son and daughter .

Assistant master Oundle 1951 ; senior lecturer in Education , St Luke ’ s College Exeter , 1959-63 . Wells Theological College 1960 , deacon 1961 , priest 1962 ; curate Countess Wear 1962 ; Chaplain Exeter School 1962 ; Principal , Cathedral School Mumbai 1964 ; Headmaster , West Buckland School , Devon 1968 , where he oversaw a rapid increase in pupil numbers ; member of HMC . His professional expertise and visionary initiatives were accompanied by a personal humility and strong Christian faith . He married Elsie Evers in 1951 , who predeceased , and he is survived by 2 sons and a daughter .

Sub-Lt 1945 ; minesweeping 1945-6 . He worked for Reiss , Bradley & Co , Hong Kong 1948- 61 ; Tootal Broadhurst Lee , Manchester 1961-6 ; Sulgrave Stores , Banbury 1966- 85 . He married Jennifer Walker in 1963 , who survives him .
David Middleton ( K , 40-45 ); died 27.4.2023 . Brother of JIM and RMM . VIII 1944-5 . Life Guards 1945 , 2 Lt 1946 ; Palestine 1947 . New College Oxford 1948 , 3 Jur 1950 , BA , MA 1955 . He was admitted solicitor 1953 into his family firm established in the 1830s ; president , Leeds Law Society 1976-7 ; retired from practice 1986 . He was chairman of the Yorkshire Association for the Disabled and worked for a number of other charities mostly for disability . He loved nature and wildlife , regularly holidaying in the Lake District . A keen historian and a lover of classical music . He married Marion Wood in 1951 , who died in 2008 , and is survived by 2 sons and a daughter .

He married ( 1 ) Vanessa Anson in 1962 ; and ( 2 ) Juliet Cubitt nee Woodall in 1984 , who survives him together with 3 daughters and a son from the first marriage .
