Farmer on the family estate at Stockton ; director Salisbury Cereals Ltd 1993-2006 . He won two national farming awards , which confirmed his status as a serious and imaginative farmer . He was a born naturalist , especially as an ornithologist , and a brilliant wildlife photographer . A keen windsurfer , tennis player and skier . He married Susannah Bomford in 1963 , who survives him together with 2 sons and 2 daughters .
Henry ( Harry ) Victor Bates ( I , 50-55 ); died 7.11.2023 . Son of AHB . Capt of Fencing . R Irish Fusiliers later R Irish Rangers . British Embassy Warsaw 1981-84 . CO School of Infantry ( HQ and Admin ) 1984 , retired as Lt-Col . He was appointed Regimental Secretary , becoming involved with the running of the Regimental Chapel in St Anne ’ s Cathedral Belfast , and was a trustee of Regimental Museum situated in Armagh , also trustee of Somme Nursing Home ( charity for service- and exservicemen ) 2008-12 . He enjoyed his dogs , Norwegian Elk Hounds and then latterly Border Collies . His lifelong love of classical music ( started as it did at Winchester ) meant his knowledge was deep . He had a boat and travelled all over the Irish Inland Waterways each summer for years , taking countless photographs . He married Ruth Leese , who survives him , together with a son and daughter .

Scholar , Corpus Christi College Cambridge 1957-60 , 2 ( i ) Econ , BA ; Trinity College Oxford 1961-2 , Politics , BPhil . Lecturer LSE 1965 ; appointed Reader 1980 . Author of The Social Problem in the Philosophy of Rousseau 1974 , A Critique of Freedom and Equality 1980 , Feminism 1981 , The Idea of an Ethical Community 1995 , The Liberal Project and Human Rights 2008 and The Nature and Limits of Human Equality 2013 . From 2015 he spent much time in the Jura : a very beautiful old farmhouse and a garden he loved very much , and where he would spend most of his time working on , when not writing his books . He was a convinced European , showed sporting prowess in youth and was always a good dancer . He married ( 1 ) Barbara Keeling in 1963 and ( 2 ) Eliza Kaczynska-Nay in 1997 , who survives him together with a daughter from the first marriage , a son predeceased , and a son and stepdaughter from the second .
John Martin Whitfield ( C , 51-56 ); died 13.2.2024 . Co Prae , VIII and Fives ( capt ) 1956 . RA 1956-8 ; St John ’ s College Cambridge , 3 Mech Sci 1961 . He had a career as a structural engineer with various firms of consulting engineers , retiring from Posford Duvivier in 2000 . The nicest and gentlest of souls , he had many friends and was an enthusiastic sailor , skier , photographer , cyclist and a lover of good music and wine . He married Frances Hornby in 1969 , who survives him together with 2 daughters and a son .
Piers Reginald Thompson ( H , 50-55 ); died 4.11.2023 . Son of PGT , brother of RBGT , 3rd generation of Wykehamists , father to son . National service with RWF , Berlin and Malaya 1956-58 . After 3 years travelling the world , he joined St Austell Brewery Co Ltd , Cornwall , initially responsible for the pub estate and free trade sales . He became a director in 1967 , and his commitment to St Austell Brewery ’ s growth and success led him to become Managing Director in 1979 . He held this position until 2000 before assuming the role of Chairman , a role he held until 2007 . President 2008 . High Sheriff of Cornwall 1998 . He loved shooting , skiing , gardening and his dogs . He married Victoria Thwaites in 1966 , who survives him together with 2 daughters and a son .
Jonathan Joseph de Carrieres Virden ( C , 50-55 ); died 29.10.2023 . VIII 1954-5 . Learned to fly Tiger Moths within Flying Scholarship scheme 1955 and served National Service in RAF as Pilot Officer in Technical Signals branch . New College Oxford 1957- 61 , captain of NCBC 1958 – 59 and OUBC junior and senior trials 1960 . 2 Chem , BA 1961 . Brewer 1961-73 with Arthur Guinness , Dublin . Life Member of the Royal Dublin Society . Hop merchant from 1974 with Morris Hanbury Jackson , Managing Director 1981-90 . Consultant 1992-2006 . In 1976 he sailed in the transatlantic race to USA and sailing became the principal holiday for many years . His interests were science and technology , the origin of religion , DIY and gardening . He married Joy Webber in 1977 , who survives him together with a daughter . A son predeceased .
