He worked for : the Bank of London & Montreal ( Latin America ) 1962-5 ; and then for the Economist Intelligence Unit 1965-72 , director Mexico office 1967-72 ; for Samuel Montagu & Co Ltd 1972-86 , director from 1978 ; and finally , as group head / senior adviser , International Finance Corporation ( World Bank ), Washington DC and London , 1986-2002 . He married Catherine Robertson in 1972 , who survives him together with their 2 sons and a daughter .

He worked as a research chemist and quality control manager for a number of chemical , textile and pharmaceutical companies in Canada , USA and Bahamas , and finally with Sandoz Chemicals , Charlotte NC . He was awarded four US patents . He had a gentle but adventurous spirit : as a teenager he toured Europe on a Vespa , and free-climbed cliffs along the English coast . He was an avid boater and windsurfer in the Bahamas . In the 1980s , he helped found the Charlotte chapter of the American Youth Soccer Organization ( AYSO ), where he served as treasurer and linesman . He married Alice Whitener in 1972 , who survives him together with a son and daughter .

Managing director and chairman of the Birmingham Mint Group plc from 1973-1990 ; chairman of LTE Scientific from 1992 until his death ; chairman CBI West Midlands Region 1984-6 ; chairman of the CBI SME Council ; president of GAMBICA ; member of the Financial Reporting Council ; and member of the Small Business Council , for whom he helped undertake the first review and reform of UK company law in 40 years . He married Rebecca Barclay in 1966 , who survives him , together with a daughter and son .

Scholar Trinity College Oxford , 2 ( 1 ) PPE ; Mansfield Scholar while studying for Bar at Lincoln ’ s Inn ; called to the Bar , 1966 ; QC 1984 ; Bencher 1987 ; Recorder 1990 ; Knighted 1998 . Took part in a number of celebrated libel cases , often against the formidable George Carman . He secured the highestever libel damages at that time when his client Lord Aldington sued Count Nikolai Tolstoy . High Court Judge ( QBD ) 1998 , in practice as arbitrator 2008-12 ; special advisor to Parliamentary Committee on Privacy ; adjudicator in claims brought against News Group by victims of phone hacking . In retirement he lived in Dorset and devoted his energies to his garden . He married ( 1 ) Rosalind Whinney in 1968 , marriage dissolved 1990 , and ( 2 ) Susan Astor in 1995 , who died in 1997 , and ( 3 ) Cynthia Selby in 2001 , who survives him together with a son and daughter of the first marriage .
