Anthony George Richard Gater ( E , 46-52 ); died 13.7.2021 . Son of GHG ( Fellow , 36-62 ; Warden , 51-59 ). VI 1951 ( capt ), Soccer XI 1952 . 2Lt KRRC 1952-4 . New College Oxford , 2 PPE 1957 . Industrial economist , P & O 1957 ; Political and Economic Planning 1962 . He worked with Fritz Schumacher at the Intermediate Technology Development Group 1966-7 ; UN Industrial Development Organisation 1968 ; and National Economic Development Office 1969- 86 , heading the group working for the textiles and garment industries : he enthusiastically promoted Better Made in Britain , a 1980s campaign to match buyers to British suppliers . Part author of Thrusters and Sleepers . In retirement , he was closely involved with creating and establishing the charity Fine Cell Work , teaching prisoners needlework to boost their self-worth and to encourage them to lead independent , crime-free lives : he contributed energy and persistence to its establishment and its continuing success . An art lover all his life he took to acquiring pictures that defied identification and he left a collection of intriguing and beautiful works of art . He is remembered by many for his loyalty and his unfailing cheerfulness . He married Alison Moore in 1985 , who survives him , together with a daughter and a son . Obituary in The Guardian .
Richard Dudley Hilken ( B , 48-52 ); died 8.2020 . Brother of PH . Royal Navy 52 – 56 . Fitzwilliam College , Cambridge , Architecture & Fine Arts 2.2 . He then worked for Ove Arup and York City Council , where he exposed serious corruption , and then for the Housing Corporation , finally as Regional Director in the South West as an authority on subsidised rural housing . In retirement he led a charity in Exeter helping the homeless find secure accommodation ( they housed 800 people in seven years ). He was a trustee for three Housing Associations , including the Quaker and Guinness HAs and was on the Quaker Agenda Committee for 9 years , running courses on eldership and oversight all over England . His booklet Reason , Faith and Experience was published in 2003 . He is survived by his wife Sylvia , and by a daughter and a son .

Director , Lithgows Ltd 1956 , chairman from 1959 ; chairman , Hunterston Development Co Ltd ; vice-chairman Scott Lithgow Ltd 1968-78 ; director , Bank of Scotland 1962-86 ; Greenock District Hospital Board 1961-6 ; General Board , National Physical Laboratory 1963-6 . Hon President , Students ’ Association Court , University of Strathclyde 1964-9 . Executive Scottish Council 1969-85 ; Scottish Council of CBI 1969-76 ; Clyde Port Authority 1969- 71 ; National Ports Council 1971-8 ; Winston Churchill Trust 1979-83 ;

He expanded the residual family business with interests in salmon farming , fishing-boat building and agriculture , the latter focused on his estate at Ormsary , near Lochgilphead . He married ( 1 ) Valerie Scott in 1964 and ( 2 ) Mary Claire Hill in 1967 , who survives him together with 2 sons and a daughter from the second marriage . Obituary in The Telegraph .

Aeronautical engineering apprentice , Vickers- Armstrongs ( Aircraft ), 1953-7 ; sales departments 1959-63 , including 2 years in Paris ; Concorde production 1963-6 . Farmer and then head gardener , firstly at Bakenham House , Englefield Green ; for 10 years editor , The Professional Gardener ( Gardeners Guild ) 1989-99 . In 2006 , he retired to Dorset , where he became actively involved with the Swanage Steam Railway . He married Catherine St Cin in 1970 .
