He had huge energy and interest in all things , particularly history , current affairs , travel and gardening : it was “ so important to have a potted knowledge of a subject than none at all .” A man of order , decency and honesty with a passion for his country and devotion to his family . He married Stourie Brown in 1948 , who died in 2018 . He is survived by their 2 daughters .

He was sent to Istanbul as a G3 , having learnt Turkish : he was always very reticent about his actual role there . War Office and MI9 1950 : when the Korean War broke out , he had to telephone Mr . Atlee at No . 10 to inform him our intelligence had become aware that General Macarthur was actively considering using the atom bomb on North Korea , which resulted in Atlee flying post haste to Washington to persuade President Truman this would be an unwise course of action . He then , as a mere Captain , regularly briefed the Cabinet , earning high praise from the CIGS , FM The Viscount Slim , and Ernest Bevin , the Foreign Secretary ; retired 1952 . Norton RA had led the 1924 Everest expedition on which Mallory died and the memorial to Mallory in Cloister is based on a photo of Mallory and Norton climbing high on Everest in 1922 ; brother of WJEN and HEN ; father of RWN and ECN ; Exhibitioner ( 2nd on roll ). Wartime evacuee from UK via family in India to South Africa ; St Andrew ’ s College , Grahamstown , 1941-43 ; Magdalen College Oxford 1944-5 . RA 1945 , 2 Lt 1946 ; regular commission 1947 , Capt 1953 , Maj 1960 , retired 1976 as Lt Col . 1976- 87 , Department of Education and Science , inter alia overseeing the scientific Research Councils ; retired as assistant secretary ; consultant to CBI 1987- 90 ; chairman , then president , Eddystone Housing Association from

His love for sailing began in Malaya but became serious with the purchase of a Cal 20 in 1968 : he later enjoyed racing his Martin 29 , ultimately buying the hull of a Fraser 41 and finishing it in the backyard over several years . He will be fondly remembered as a dedicated paediatrician , teacher , sailor , author , musician , poet and friend .
